Elemental Plants
This series of works was initially inspired by time spent in Portuark, a tiny coastal hamlet in Ardnamurchan, the most westerly region of North West Scotland. A remote and beautiful volcanic landscape and seascape that is home to a plethora of resilient wild plants.
Working from drawings of the plants and research into their structure and detail I have then created these stylised portrayals, seeking to express how these plants make me feel in the context of their landscape. The expressive use of bright and neon paints gives a resonant energy that generates a sense of a universal life force and the elemental energy of the sun and the earth. The plants are an expression or manifestaion of our universal connection. The suggestion of landscape and seascape using simple geometric design of line, circles and semi-circles also emphasises a sense of the elemental and the universal.
